Friday Night Racing

Well, Friday has come and gone and all I can say is it was a blast. I took my Novak 17.5 out of my X-Ray and put it into my T-4. I had to change the spur and pinion so I can get the proper gear ratio that I wanted. So I installed a 78 tooth spur and a 27 tooth pinion. Took it out for some practice laps and car didn't have the punch that I thought it should have. So I asked Skip who was Pitting down the way from me and he said to put in a 28 tooth pinion and that should give me the power I was looking for. I installed the 28 tooth pinion and I got the power I was looking for. WOW one tooth big difference. But I still need a lot more practice. So After 2 rounds of qualifing I finished 5Th in the B main not so good. At the start of the race I was trying too hard and got caught up in the pipe. Then I hear a voice Kevin plenty of time you can catch up. It was Scotty telling me to take it easy slow is fast stay in between the pipes. So I did just that stayed between the pipes and before I new it I was catching up. I caught up to the 4Th place and drove behind him for a bit and waiting then he made a mistake he hit the pipe. So I drove around him. Then off to find 3rd place kept the truck between the pipes and and low and behold there he was 3rd so I followed him for a lap or two. Then he did it he went wide I cut to the inside and I was off to find 2Nd. Lucky for me 2Nd was just up ahead. So I kept fighting and then I hear 1 minute left I have to make my move soon. Then I hear it first place broke. I keep driving and keeping the truck between the lines. I am in 2Nd now. I try to go and catch up to the now first place guy but alas it was to late time was up I have to take 2Nd. But I like how my car is handling. Skip was marshaling my race and he came up to me and said that I have enough power but I need to watch my driving and throttle control. He told me that on some of the jumps I am hitting the throttle too hard and I need to roll over certain ones in order to make other jumps. So Saturday here I come to do some practice.

I run a 78/33, sometimes 32 in my T4 - it varies by track, but you're going to want to gear according to motor temperature after 4-5 minutes of constant running. Follow the motor manufacturer's recommended high temperature - usually around 160 Fahrenheit. I just go by the "five second rule" - if I can hold my finger on the motor can for five seconds after a run, I'm safe.
